At Barcelona Montessori School, we understand the importance of sustainability and our shared responsibility to care for and protect our planet. As part of this commitment, we are going to start creating a new vegetable garden in the patio of our Pomaret campus!
We believe that helping children develop an awareness of the natural world from an early age is essential in nurturing environmentally conscious individuals who understand the importance of respecting and caring for our environment.
Caring for the environment is an essential part of our Montessori curriculum. Through practical, hands-on experiences, children learn to appreciate nature, understand the needs of living things and recognise how their everyday actions can make a difference. Our Children’s House students will be responsible for looking after the garden, learning first-hand how plants grow, what they need to thrive and how we can contribute to a healthier planet.
After the mid-term break, we will begin preparing the garden for planting. Our vision is to create a space with a variety of aromatic herbs, fruits and vegetables where children can observe how plants grow, learn what they need to thrive and take an active role in caring for them. We are sure the children will be delighted to be part of this project and will enjoy watching their garden grow!
How you can help
However, we also know that curiosity can sometimes lead little hands a little further than they should go! That is why we would love your help in preparing the children for their new responsibility when they return to school in November.
Over the break, you could encourage your children to care for plants at home, helping them understand that plants need water, sunlight and gentle care. You can also explain why we should not pull off leaves, break stems, pick flowers without permission or step on plants. A family walk in nature is another wonderful opportunity to reinforce the importance of respecting and protecting our natural environment.
If you would like to contribute a plant to our new garden, we would be delighted to hear from you! Please contact Núria or your child’s teacher before bringing anything in so that we can recommend suitable plants for our garden.
We look forward to watching our little garden grow alongside our children, nurturing not only plants but also their sense of responsibility, respect and care for the world around them.
